A recent survey, done by NPR, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and the Harvard School of Public Health, found that Latino immigrants in the U.S. are presently more worried about diabetes than any other health issue.
This news should come as no great surprise, as previous researchsuggests that Hispanics are at a higher risk for diabetes than any other minority group in the United States. One contributing factor to this phenomenon is the fact that Hispanics are genetically predisposed to the disease. That inherent susceptibility, combined with inadequate nutrition and reduced physical activity among Latinos, have thrust diabetes to the forefront of health concerns in the Hispanic community.
Aside from diabetes, another pressing concern for Hispanic immigrants is the affordability of health care. In the same poll mentioned above, about a third of surveyed immigrants said they’d had a serious problem with being able to pay for health insurance in the past 12 months. Additionally, more than one-fourth of respondents reported having had a serious problem affording doctor bills and medicines.
