Does it seem like more men than ever have misplaced their razors? That influx of facial hair is for a good cause: NoShave November, the U.S. equivalent of Movember, an Australian creation to promote awareness of prostate and testicular cancer.
The idea behind it is that mustaches will become a walking billboard of sorts for men’s health. The month is dedicated to growing awareness of men’s health needs by growing a beard, mustache or both, and raising funds to support cancer research.
From a touch of scruff to the grizzliest, ZZ Top-like beards, NoShave November has become a big, hairy deal. And that’s a good thing if it helps remind the men in our lives to focus on their health. According to the CDC, women are 100% more likely to visit their doctors for annual exams and preventative services.
It’s time we face some facts about men’s health:
- 1 in 2 men will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime
- 1 in 7 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer
- Testicular cancer is the most common cancer in men 15 – 35 years old
- Men, on average, die almost five years earlier than women (76.2 years compared to 81 years)
- 12.1% of men over 18 are in fair or poor health
- More than four times as many men than women die by suicide
Just like it takes a big man to pull off a Tom Selleck ‘stache from the ‘70s, it can be tougher to get a guy to schedule his regular yearly checkup.
